ArteActa is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to performing arts and artistic research. It has been published since 2018. Since 2022, we have been publishing exclusively online, under an Open Access model, licensed under a Creative Commons license for non-commercial use on an international scale (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). The journal is published by the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.
We focus on 20th- and 21st-century performing arts and their interdisciplinary intersections, as well as artistic research in the broader sense.
We accept expositions, manuscripts, and video essays that have not yet been published and are not currently undergoing peer review. Contributions to ArteActa undergo a standard double-blind peer review process.
We accept artistic research expositions primarily through the Research Catalogue platform www.researchcatalogue.net. All media files must be embedded directly into the RC user interface (not as links to external platforms).
From a formal standpoint, we follow the Chicago style (author-date) bibliography norm.
We publish all types of contributions in Czech, English, and Slovak. Publication is governed by the journal's Code of Ethics; peer-reviewed contributions are also subject to the rules for the peer-review process.
The video essay must be an original work of the author or a group of authors. The author or group of authors must secure the rights to any content used (excerpts or sequences from other audiovisual works). ArteActa is not responsible for any unauthorized use of content. We recommend clearly distinguishing the author’s own audiovisual material from borrowed material within the body of the video essay and citing the source for the borrowed material. The length of video essays is flexible; the typical duration ranges from 10 to 30 minutes, with a text explanation of approximately 5–10 standard pages. For video essays, if it is not possible to submit them via Research Catalogue, please consult the submission format in advance by emailing redakce@arteacta.cz.
Once a year, ArteActa publishes an issue based on a thematic open call. This open call is typically published in March on the journal website, ArteActa’s Instagram, and via the newsletter of the Society for Art Research (SARA).
Once a year, ArteActa prepares an issue without a specific theme based on contributions submitted on an ongoing basis.
ArteActa accepts expositions created on the Research Catalogue platform. The author must first create an account on Research Catalogue (RC), then they create their exposition (detailed instructions here) and submit it to ArteActa via the “submit to” option in the RC.
By submitting an exposition, manuscript, or video essay, the author agrees to the rules for publication in the ArteActa journal and confirms that they are the sole author of the exposition and have settled all copyright issues regarding the accompanying visual and audiovisual materials.
Acceptance of a submission by the editors does not automatically guarantee its publication. Publication is subject to the peer-review process and the usual editorial process. Authors should expect a timeframe of 1 to 1.5 years from submission to publication.
1) Submission of a draft (only in case of an open call)
Authors responding to an open call submit a draft of their exposition proposal via the RC. They will then receive a decision regarding acceptance or rejection. If necessary, the editorial team will recommend structural and content-related revisions to refine the exposition, manuscript, or video essay into its final form.
2) Submission of the complete exposition/video essay/manuscript
The author will receive editorial feedback on the submission. The editorial team will send the author detailed editorial recommendations and instructions for revisions prior to the peer review process. The editorial team will evaluate the submission before peer review and reserve the right to exclude it from the editorial process if its formal or content quality is inadequate.
3) Peer-reviewed submissions are subject to our Peer Review Process
The manuscript is sent to two external experts for review under a double-blind peer review process. Based on their evaluation of the anonymous manuscript, the anonymous reviewers prepare a report resulting in one of the following recommendations: a) acceptance for publication; b) acceptance for publication after minor revisions; c) acceptance for publication after substantial revisions; d) rejection of the manuscript.
4) Author Revisions Following the Review Process
The author agrees to revise the manuscript in accordance with the reviewers’ requirements and the editor’s comments. After the changes have been incorporated, the editor will evaluate the revisions. The editorial team reserves the right to reject the manuscript at this stage as well, should the revisions not be adequate in light of the review reports.
5) Proofreading
The manuscript is sent for proofreading. The authors receive the proofread version and incorporate any changes into their expositions in the RC. The editorial staff then performs a final review before publication.
6) Publication
Issues are typically published in June–July and December–January. Authors agree to submit their consent to the publication of their contribution using the template provided by the editor.
In the case of expositions, video essays, or manuscripts submitted to the journal on an ongoing basis (outside of open calls), the editorial process follows the rules outlined above, except for point 1).
